Scope and Contents

The collection is comprised of photographs of Allen Oscar Jones, including photos of his childhood, trips to Europe and Texas, Jones with friends and family, as well as class portraits. Locations depicted in the photographs include Lakewood Park, Moreland Elementary School, Little Five Points, Houston and Galveston, Texas, and unspecified locations in Europe. The bulk of the collection is from Jones’ childhood in Atlanta in the 1940s and 1950s.

The collection includes images of residents and homes in the Bedford-Pine district of Atlanta, Georgia during the early 1970’s. The images depict children playing in the streets and on playgrounds as well as adults outside their homes. The photographs depict dilapidated and condemned housing in the area, a few neighborhood storefronts, refuse, and scenes of the Atlanta skyline in the background.

Long, Rucker, and Aiken family photographs and lithographs

The collection documents the political, civic, educational, professional, family, and social life of members of the Long, Rucker, and Aiken families from 1859 through the 1970s. The images document three generations of the Long, Rucker, and Aiken families and visually chronicles their rise from slavery to social and political influence. This collection contains images of substandard housing and living conditions in the southwestern areas of Atlanta, Georgia, including Stewart Avenue (later named Metropolitan Parkway); Battle Hill neighborhood (later named Westview neighborhood); Vine City neighborhood; and Philadelphia Avenue. The slides feature images of residential homes, children playing, and physically deteriorating landscapes heavily populated with trash and other discarded materials.
